By John Van Kempen - Morris, MN
The West Central Area Cross Country Team traveled to Morris to compete with 14 other teams in the opening meet of the season on Monday. The girls team placed third behind Rocori and Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson Boyd. The boys place fifth, with Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson Boyd winning the event. West Central 8th grader Lexi Bright finished in third in 21:24 followed by Ella Van Kempen (14th), Teagan Nelson (16th), Bryn Fernholz (26th), Chloe LaRue (32nd) and Steph Toms (43rd). “The course seemed pretty slow with some soggy spots but we were pleased with how we raced today,” said Head Coach John Van Kempen. “They raced together and kept their teammates within eyesight.” The boys were led by Lexi’s older brother Jacob Bright finishing in second in 17:26. Jack Van Kempen was next for the Knights in 20th place, followed by Kyle Schill (28th), Caleb Getz (32nd), Hunter Mickelson (45th), Chase Veldhouse (53rd), Tim Ruud (73rd) and Matt Poyzer (90th). “Caleb ran a great race for his first experience in cross country,” noted Van Kempen. “Our junior high boys ran well with three eighth graders (Kade Runge, Reubens Swanson and Alex Salwasser) going first, second and third in the junior high races. Some of these guys will be able to help our varsity in future races.” Next action for the Knights will be Thursday, August 31 in Breckenridge.
