The West Central Area Lady Knights were eliminated from the Section 6A Softball playoffs on Thursday when they fell to Brandon-Evansville 8-2 at Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood. The Knights end the season with an impressive 17-7 record. The Chargers improved to 18-7 with the win and earned the opportunity to face New York Mills for the section title. The Eagles won that game 12-3, qualifying for the Class A State Tournament at Caswell Park in North Mankato on Thursday, June 8 and Friday, June 9.
The Lady Knights struck first when Lexi Bright drew a one out walk in the first inning and scored ahead of Brianna Kreft on her home run over the left field fence.
Brandon-Evansville scored a run in the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lizzy Friedrich, scoring Morgan Stelzer who had reached third base on a single and a two-base error to lead off the inning. The Chargers pulled even with the Knights in the fourth. Kristin Kokett delivered a pinch-hit single, stole second and advanced to third when the throw went into center field. She then came home on an infield ground out by Emily Bukkila, making the score 2-2.
The Chargers batted around in a four-run fifth inning with Carrigan Okerlund knocking in the go-ahead runs with a two-run double, driving home Stelzer and Friedrich who had singled earlier in the inning. An RBI single by Bailey Schaefer scored Okerlund and double by Haddey Zastrow brought home Schaefer to give B-E a 6-2 lead.
Two unearned runs came home on a two-out seventh inning single by Kennedy Lund to put the final margin of victory at 8-2 for Brandon-Evansville.
Sadie Roers (7IP, 6H, 2ER, 4BB, 2K) went the distance to earn the win. Stelzer (2-5, 2R, SB), Okerlund (2-4, 2RBI, R), Friedrich (1-2, 2BB, R, RBI, SF) and Kennedy Lund (1-4, BB, 2RBI) were the offensive leaders for the Chargers.
Leaders for West Central Area were Kreft (1-3, HR, 3RBI, R), Morgan Sanstead (1-4, 2B) and Hannah Anderson (2-3).
