The West Central Area Knights entered the tournament season on a pleasant spring day on Wednesday, May 24th. The Knights tried to remind themselves that Benson was just another golf course with green grass, long fairways and beautiful greens, but the "tourney nerves" set in a bit today. Katie Merrick finished her high school golfing career with a 112. Katie has been balancing golf, track and the craziness of being an active senior about to graduate. That is a lot to ask of anyone and she has handled it so well. Her score wasn't as low as she had hoped, but her shots were flying. Her smile keeps all of us going and her positive attitude and gift for conversation makes her a sought after opponent among area teams. We will sure miss her. Kate Wrolson felt good about her game, shooting a strong 117 on a longer and challenging course. Kate is our quiet and steady golfer. We can always count on her sneaking in with a score we can all be proud of. Lexi Poyzer was quoted saying, "My 121 today wasn't my best, but I'm having a positive outlook on it! I had a birdie on hole two and felt good about my drives." Lexi has had such a strong year and become a very competitive golfer that we depend on on a regular basis. We are excited to see where she will lead us next year. Libby struggled today, carding a 141. Although she was disappointed, she handled herself so well. 18 holes of golf can seem to last forever when it isn't your day and yet Libby Poyzer did so with determination and a competitiveness she didn't even realize she had. Seeing her fight for each hole, hitting solid drives and putting to win each hole with strong fundamentals and a winning attitude meant more to us as a team, than any score. Jessica St. Martin had a strong round overall with drives and putting being her strongest assets. She made it look easy today with smooth strokes and a confident short game. Her wonderful 95 earned her a trip to the second day of the section tournament next week. We look forward to continue the season with her.
