The West Central Area Lady Knights are 9-1 after a somewhat ugly 17-15 win in extra innings on Tuesday against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley.
“We took a 2-0 lead with some strong defense, and then everything went downhill,” reported WCA Head Coach Vanessa McNamara. “At one point in the 3rd inning, after giving up 11 runs on 7 errors, with no outs, we found ourselves down 14-5. We then put all our efforts together and fought. We decided we would try to get a few runs each inning until the end. We tied it at 14's in the seventh and had Hailey Bennett strike out all 3 batters in the bottom of the 7th to go into extra innings. We started out the 8th inning with a huge triple from Lexi Bright who was later able to score, giving us a 15-14 lead. A few defensive errors on our end and the score was tied again at 15 to go one more inning. In the top of the 9th, we found ourselves in a position where we had two outs, nobody on bases and Brianna Kreft in the box. She had a great at bat getting onto first. Next was Lexi Bright up to bat. Again, she came through for us hitting another huge triple, scoring Kreft. Lexi was able to score our 17th run on a passed ball. The bottom of the 9th the Knights tightened up their D and put out the first three batters to seal the win.” Hailey Bennett came in during the middle of the 3rd inning recording 5 walks, striking out 12 and allowing only 2 hits, to lead the Knights to victory. Brianna Kreft started the night on the mound throwing 2.2 innings walking 8, striking out 4, and gave up 10 hits.
“Tonight wasn't the prettiest win we've had,” noted Coach McNamara, “but I'm very proud of our team for continuing to fight. It could have been very easy in the beginning of the game to hang our heads and quit. They set goals, met them, and stood by one another. Everyone on our team tonight had an error and everyone on our team did something great. We had incredible unity and we fought till the end. Every player was there to pick up another player the entire game. That's something to be proud of.”
