The West Central Area Knights fast pitch team started out well their first four innings of softball getting a 9-0 lead on the way to a 14-9 win over the Breckenridge Cowgirls.
“Breckenridge had a great pitcher who threw the ball hard and once we adjusted our bats, we hit incredibly well,” said Head Coach Vanessa McNamara of the lady Knights.
“The Sanstead’s led the team in batting. Kaitlyn Sanstead had a huge night for us ending her night with a triple, two doubles and a single. Morgan Sanstead ended with two doubles and a single and Hailey Hansen had another game where her bat was consistent getting 3 singles! Again, I was proud on how well our girls batted. We faced a pitcher who threw hard, had a great change up and moved the ball around. We gave up 7 strike outs against her, but also got 15 hits off of her. Of those 15 hits, we had 7 doubles and 2 triples. Our girls hit the ball hard and ran the bases incredibly well.”
In the 5th inning things got a little rocky for WCA when Breckenridge pulled off 5 hits and a grand slam, coupled with two Knight fielding errors, giving them 7 runs in the book. With a 9-7 lead, the Knights answered back with five more runs.
Defensively, Brianna Kreft pitched the first four innings and the final two. Kreft ended the night facing 28 batters, striking out 9, walking 6 and two hit by pitch. Brianna had one earned run against her and gave up 3 hits. Hailey Bennet pitched the 5th inning. Bennet faced 10 batters, walking one and giving up 4 earned runs and 3 hits.
“Overall, I was very proud of our team,” said McNamara. “Due to conferences and no school a few days last week, our practices have been far and few between. It was great to see our players able to jump into the box after 4 days off and really hit the ball. Defensively, we have a few areas to work on, but I'm proud to say our team only had 3 errors the whole game. Tonight's game helped us realize what we need to focus on moving ahead. We have 7 games in the next week and a half, we are going to learn on the fly as we don't have a team practice until after Easter. Our team never fails to amaze me! They are hard workers, incredibly talented, but most importantly, hungry for knowledge. As always, I feel lucky to coach such a fun group of girls!”
