The West Central Area Lady Knights had a great night on the softball field Monday, racking up a total of 18 hits to drive in 23 runs in just four innings as they defeated the Hancock Owls by the score of 23-5.
Hailey Hansen led the Knights, hitting 3 balls to the fence earning herself a triple, a ground rule double and another double. Izzy Wittbrodt came up strong going 3-3 with a single each time. Morgan Sanstead also got her bat going getting herself a triple, double and a single. Finally, Brianna Kreft hit the ball long with a home run!
“I was incredibly proud to see the players step up and hit the ball,” said Head Coach Vanessa McNamara. “This was their first time hitting off a live pitcher outside and they really worked hard to not only hit the ball, but also run the bases incredibly well. We had a total of 12 stolen bases in only 4 innings. We also took advantage of a few situations where we forced Hancock to throw the ball around giving us extra bases and runs.”
Brianna Kreft pitched the first three innings of the game striking out 7 batters, walking 4 batters and hitting 5 batters while giving up only no hits. Hailey Bennett struck out 5, walked 3 and hit one batter while giving up 4 hits in her two innings of work.
“Tonight was the first time our girls threw live to batters outside,” added McNamara. “It took a bit to get in our groove on the mound, but once we did, they both threw the ball well. Brianna's change up was coming across the plate beautifully and Hailey really threw some accurate heat tonight. Things will keep improving for our pitching as we get nice weather and time outside. Overall, I'm thrilled with tonight's outcome. The girls played so hard and really hit the ball well. It's not often you can say every player on the team got at least 1 hit, every person scored, and our team ended the night with only one strike out. When we can hold our own in the batters’ box, the rest of the game falls into place nicely. Also, it was great to see so many fans in the stands, see the girls work together as a team, and of course bring home a win. I'm proud to be part of this program with these awesome, hard working players!
