Knight Boys Basketball Awards & Season Wrap-up

The WCA boys’ basketball team celebrated their awards night on Tuesday night, March 21st.   The Knights didn’t finish the season the way they wanted to with an 11-15 overall record but they did reach some of their season goals and outscored their opponents, a testament to how many close games they lost.  The Knights outscored their opponents this year averaging 55.4 ppg and giving up 53.8 ppg.

Some of the goals that they reached were winning their Holiday tournament, practicing and playing with intensity every day, and that they stayed together as a team.   Coach Kraig Hunter did say that was one main characteristic of this team by stating that “no matter what kind of adversity we faced, these guys were extremely close and always supported one another.”

Hunter said another characteristic of this team was that they were generally a good defensive team that was tough to score against.  The Knights were ranked in the top 20 in Class A in defense for much of the year.   They set three school records on defense this year:  1) Fewest points allowed in one half (5 vs. Upsala), 2) Most charges taken as a team in one season (70 charges taken), and 3) most charges taken in one game (7 vs. Warroad).   “Taking 70 charges in one season is nearly an average of three per game, which shows the toughness these kids had”, said Hunter.

Another goal the team had was to break the school record for defensive FG % which is holding teams to 38.7%.  They did not get the record but still were pretty impressive in that area holding teams to 41% on the season.

Coach Kraig Hunter concluded by saying, “In the bigger picture of things, we asked them in the locker room after our last game, ‘Are you a good person? And do you have tools to succeed in life?’  There is no doubt that this group does.  Our five seniors exemplify that.  We will miss the contributions of Jake Combs, Alex Endreson, Caden Fernholz, Jack Nelson, and Aaron Wiese.”
