The West Central Area girls basketball team built a 32-17 halftime lead Friday night and went on to record a 58-40 win over Battle Lake in a non-conference contest hosted by the lady Battlers.
"This game for us was a step in the right direction towards playing as a team," commented WCA Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer. "Everyone contributed in some aspect to pull this victory out, and that is somethimg we need to continue to build on. Our ability to take things we have practiced an dput them into play was a huge positive for us tonight. The Battlers are a disciplined team and they worked hard throughout the game and that did not allow us to relax."
Brianna Kreft (15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist), Ella Van Kempen (15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks, 1 assist), Hailey Bennett (8 points, 1 rebound) and Taylin Schleicher (4 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal) were the leaders for the lady Knights. Morgan Woodle added 4 points, 2 rebounds and an assist, Dawn Anderson had 4 points and 2 boards, Lexi Bright finished with 2 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, Katie Merrick had two points and a rebound, Morgan Sanstead contributed 2 points, 1 rebound, 3 steals and an assist, and Kaitlyn Hansen added 4 rebounds and one assist.
"We got off to a slow start and turned the ball over too many times," reported Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso. "The Knights played a strong game both defensively and offensively. We had a nice run in the middle of the second half and cut the lead to single digits, but we just couldn't hold it. Alyssa Evavold (15 points) had a great game and gave us a big lift scoring during that run."
Allison Marso added 11 points and 6 rebounds for Battle Lake.
The Battlers have a three game week next week, going on the road Monday to play Frazee, traveling to Ashby for a Little Eight Conference game Thursday and then coming home to host Brandon/Evansville in another LEC contest on Friday.
