The West Central Area Knights took on the Ortonville Trojans, who are the current top ranked team in the sub-section at UMM College on Saturday afternoon. The Knights trailed 23-22 at the half and scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 30-23 lead. The Knights still led 39-36 with under three minutes to play but some costly turnovers down the stretch allowed the Trojans to win the game 42-40.
Knights Coach Kraig Hunter said, "Hands down our best defensive effort of the season. We held the top team in our sub-section with a 16-3 record that is very explosive and balanced offensively to only 42 points. Possession after possession, we got big stops and we took away their strengths. However, the story of this game was turnovers. We had 20, they had 7. They only shot 35% (17-49) and we were 17-39 for 44%. They had ten more shots and three more trips to the line than us due to the 13 turnover difference. I told our guys that we are doing everything right in every other part of the game, but when they have 13 more meaningful possessions than us, it is pretty tough. Our results won't change until we get a mentality to value the basketball. If we ever figure that out, we could be pretty good."
Rebounding was even at 26-26. The Knights made 2-3 free throws and the Trojans 5-8.
Scoring for the Knights were Logan Paulson 9, Jake Combs 9, Aaron Wiese 6, Ross Anderson 5, Dawson Staples 4, Nathan Kaye 3, Jack Nelson 2, and Brady Sabolik 2.
Sabolik had 8 assists and 3 steals, Anderson had 5 rebounds and 5 assists, and Staples also had 5 rebounds.
Scoring for Ortonville was Tyson Powell with 14, Nate Treinen 10, Mitch Meyer 7, Derek Rademacher 5, Devonte Edwards 4, and Mason Kuchameister 2. The Knights held the great 3-point shooting Britton Conroy scoreless.
