WR- Knights Wrestlers Improve to 15-0

The third week of January found the West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville grapplers in action six times.

Not only did the team compete in a half dozen duals, they wrestled them all in hostile territory...on the road. One by one the Knights took on all comers including two larger AA opponents, a pair of Section 6A foes and a duo of top ten ranked bruisers. One by one the Knights took them down improving the units dual record to 15-0.

The first opponent of the week was AA Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta. A feisty Tigers team took the mat looking to upset the visiting Knights but quickly found themselves looking at a 28-0 deficit as the Knights rolled up the first five victories. Although the Tigers did squeeze out a trio of wins the Knights tore up the Tigers in the other 11 bouts and put up a convincing score of 63-12.

The Junior Varsity competed in Morris as well with sound results of their own. The younger wrestlers went 8-6 with victories posted by Ashton DannerRuebens SwansonHunter HansonColton LindquistCody NadgewickDeklin Goeden and a pair from Jarred Lock

Thursday the team traveled to Breckenridge for a pair of section match ups with the home team Cowboys and the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines. Both opponents met virtually the same demise as a powerful Knight squad mauled their way to a 63-13 win over WDC and rounded up the Cowboys to the tune of a 69-6 battering.

The JV wrestled inspired also turning in a 13-1 record on the evening. Shad Swanson, Colton Lindquist, Bret Duncan, Hunter Hanson, Ashton Danner, Cody Nadgewick, Chase VeldhouseKade Olson, Jarred Lock, Aiden Winter and Mark Adams all ended up in the W column and Conner Nadgewick won twice.

Friday found the Knights headed south for the KMS duals. Six teams competed in in Kerkhoven, each team wrestled three times. The Knights drew three heavy hitters in AA Quad County (MacCray, Yellow Medicine East, and Renville County West Schools), #9A ranked Pipestone and the #5A ranked and home team Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints.

First up was Quad County. The dual began with each team trading falls in the first two matches but after that the Knights flexed their muscles hard and sweeping the larger QC to a 58-17 defeat. Next on the docket were the ninth ranked Pipestone Arrows. The dual was as exciting as high school wrestling can get, both squads studded with top ten ranked wrestlers. The contest provided several of the best competitors in the state in their given weights but both teams are loaded with talent ranked or not. In a knock down drag out war the Knights avenged last seasons loss to the Arrows by a score of 33-29. Last up was KMS. The dual between the #5 and #6 ranked Class A teams was also a dandy. The Kerkhoven gymnasium was deafening as the two teams slugged it out. Coaches, fans and wrestlers were unable to stay seated from excitement as the wrestlers provided all the action one would guess as the #5 and #6 teams in the state locked horns. The Knights overcame an early KMS lead and held off the Fighting Saints for the remainder of the dual. Final score was 39-18.

Several honors would happen Friday evening. For the first time since competing in the dual tournament the Knights took home the 1st place team trophy. Three WCAABE wrestlers earned 3-0 medals from the tourney, those were Kaden SpindlerKeaton Long and Mason Nibbe. Keaton Long also accomplished his 100th career victory during the dual with KMS. Congratulations Keaton!

About his teams tournament Coach Brandon Gruchow stated, “The guys found a way to pull through another three solid duals. We gradually wrestled better and better throughout the evening. It wasn't that we were wrestling bad, we just weren't wrestling like a team. We didn't go after the extra points that we could have and it nearly cost us a win against Pipestone. We pulled it together against #5 ranked KMS and wrestled like a team. It was nice to see the boys rise up to the occasion.”

As tough as this week may seem the schedule does not exactly lighten up. In fact the load intensifies right off the bat as Tuesday the team heads to Long Prairie for a triangular. They will face off with the Long Prairie/Browerville Wolves and the #2A ranked Pierz Pioneers. Friday the team heads to Browerville for a pair of duals with a tandem of single A heavyweights in the #7 ranked Minneota Vikings and the #18 seated Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars.
