The Hillcrest girls basketball team traveled to Barrett on Monday night to take on the Lady Knights. West Central Area prevailed by the final score of 56-45.
It was a battle of two teams searching for another win and it started out that way. The Comets took a 11-9 lead early in the first half, and then the Lady Knights went on a 11-2 run and led by 7 late in the first half. The Comets and Lady Knights then traded baskets a few times and the score at halftime was 27-21 in the Lady Knights favor. The second half the Lady Knights clung to a 3 point lead early, but then went on an 18-1 run and had a 20 point margin. The Comets would battle back several times, but never eclipsing a nine point deficit.
The Lady Knights were led by Ella Van Kempen with 26 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Hailey Bennett added 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Kaitlyn Hansen had 5 points, a steal, and an assist. Taylin Schleicher and Morgan Woodle each had 4 points and 2 assists. Schleicher grabbed 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Woodle added 2 rebounds. Morgan Sanstead had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Lexi Bright had 2 points and 3 steals. Katie Merrick scored 2 points, tore down 2 rebounds, assisted on a basket, and had a steal. Dawn Anderson chipped in 2 points, 5 steals, a rebound, and added an assist. Brianna Kreft had a point, a steal, an assist, and 4 rebounds on the night. Kaitlyn Sanstead had an assist and a steal tonight.
“Tonight it was fun to see our team create turnovers and turn them into fastbreak points,” stated coach Eric Schoenbauer. He went on to acknowledge their success, “Creating turnovers helped our shooting percentage and forced them to sprint back constantly. This is how we take the legs out of jump shooters and begin to set ourselves up with bigger and bigger leads.” Coach Schoenbauer concluded with, “Our ability to work as a single unit the rest of the season will dictate how successful we can be going forward.”
