Sydney Hovland poured in a career high 35 points on Thursday afternoon to lead the Underwood Rockets to a 78-62 victory over West Central Area and a third place finish in the Valhalla Division of the Minnesota National Bank Girls Basketball Classic in Pelican Rapids.
"This was a much needed win for us after a couple of tough losses to a couple of really good teams in Breckenridge and Pine City," said Head coach Brian Hovland. "Sydney did a nice job driving aggressively to the basket, she hit some 3's and got the free throw line a couple of times. Taylor Leitch (16 points, 11 rebounds) had a double-double, including 8 offensive boards, and Jacey Ross (9 points, 5 steals, 3 rebounds) played a very solid second half for us."
Underwood shot 35% (26/75) from the field and made 20-of-31 free throws. Hovland made 13-of-24 (54%) field goal attempts. The Rockets also forced 36 West Central Area turnovers in the game.
Underwood will travel to Wheaton on Tuesday to face Wheaton/Herman-Norcross.
he Pelican Rapids girls basketball team defeated West Central Area 57-38 on Wednesday in the opening round of the Minnesota National Bank Classic at Leaders Gymnasium at the Pelican Rapids High School. The Vikings will now face Pine City for the championship of the Valhalla Division at 6:00pm Thursday, while WCA takes on Underwood for third place at 12:45pm.
As a team the Vikings had three players in double digits and combined for 19 steals in the game.
Pelican Rapids was led by Adriana Torres (19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals), Sarah Thompson (12 points, 7 assists, 3 steals), Rachel Gottenborg (11 points, 3 steals), Grace Johnson (8 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals) and Maddie Guler (5 assists, 6 rebounds, 5 steals).
The Pine City team that the Vikings will play for the title is 9-0 after recording a 63-56 win over Underwood on Wednesday afternoon.
