CC-WCA Girls Take First, Boys Finish Second at Park Rapids

The season is winding down and the fall weather has arrived. It was beautiful outside until about five minutes away from Park Rapids when it decided to rain and then continued to rain until we got back on the bus. Just in time for all the races, but our kids didn’t seem to mind. We’ve asked them not to complain unless its only raining on our team, or cold for our team. It’s our final regular season meet and we treat this as a tune up for our section meet, which will determine which teams are done for the year and which teams get one more race. Our kids are working for the latter, and we have a great opportunity for both teams to reach the state race on November 5.

The girls looked impressive and I think they were a little hungry to prove themselves after losing a tie breaker in Hawley and finishing in third. Lexi Bright(4th), Ella VanKempen (6th), Brynn Fernholz (15th), Teagan Nelson (16th),Chloe LaRue (23rd), Kennedy Porter (58th) and Kaitlin Hanson (68th) came out hard and finished in first place as a team with 64 points, edging out Pelican Rapids by six, the team that had beat us in the tie breaker last week. We didn’t want to put a lot of emphasis on this meet. Our main focus is to contest for an opportunity to run together as a team at state and we feel we have set ourselves up for that opportunity. They were excited to race today and it’s kind of like telling a running back on the football team not to run for a touchdown even though your team is up by enough points to win the game. Racing is not something you can hit the switch button and say “OK, today we aren’t racing.”

The boys finished in second place to a tough Detroit Lakes team. Ryley Nelsontook the lead and was in control from the beginning. A Detroit Lake’s racer held on as long as he could to Ryley, but Ryley just kept applying the pressure and making him work to stay with him. Ryley eventually wore the front runners out except teammate Jacob Bright who moved up several spots to finish in third place. Ethan Olson was next in 13th followed by Drake Swanson 31st and Jack Van Kempen(32nd). Drake and Jack had an outstanding homestretch, holding off a few Pequot Lakes racers, a team also ranked in the state a few places behind us. We eventually beat them by 5. Chase Veldhouse was next in 57th and Kyle Schill was in 59th. Again, these guys are setting their sights on another return trip to state after finishing fourth last year. These next ten days of practice will determine our fate at the section meet. We keep reminding them to stay healthy with their sleeping habits, nutrition and training. Nothing will be just given to us, we have to earn that opportunity to compete at state.
