The West Central Area Boys and Girls Cross Country teams were both winners at the New London-Spicer Invitational on Monday.

“The meet was postponed from last Thursday until Monday, but there were still fifteen teams there, mostly from our upcoming section meet there in about a month,” reported WCA Head coach John Van Kempen. “It was a special day for WCA Cross Country, it was our girls first ever team victory in our ten years in existence. I think what made us coaches the most proud was that every girl came to compete and we were able to put four girls on the podium and bring home some team hardware. We have always believed that when we get everyone on the same page, we could be a special team. Seventh grader Lexi Bright finished in third place. She is a fierce competitor and that brings our intensity up when she is racing. Next was Ella Van Kempen in 7th and Bryn Fernholz in 9th. Ella and Bryn typically run together and having Lexi in front of helped them to race even harder. Our next two girls, Teagan Nelson and Chloe LaRue both had their best races of the year so far and really gutted it out. Teagan finished in 13th to make the podium and Chloe finished in 24th. Our sixth and seventh runners were Kaitlin Hanson in 43rd and Steph Toms in 47th. This was Kaitlin’s second 5k and she is getting more accustomed to the longer distances. Our score of 38 was our lowest ever and good enough to get our girls first place medals.”

The boys team also got first for the Knights.

“For a while, it seemed like we were coasting and then something just clicked and everyone started moving up,” said Van Kempen. “Ryley Nelson, the eventual winner just took off on the field in between mile one and two. After that, there was little left in doubt who would be the eventual champion. Jacob Bright, our next runner finished in third and was leading for about half the race until Ryley left him.Ethan Olson, also mover on the field to finish in 7th. Our four and five guys,Drake Swanson and Jack Van Kempen raced their typical race going down the homestretch together to eventually finish 23rd and 24th. Chase Veldhouse, our sixth runner made a huge jump in the race to eventually take 42nd, but was probably in 70th at the midpoint of the race. And eighth grader Kyle Schill finished in 63rd. Kyle has typically been running junior high. He helps our junior boys pace themselves and they too have been doing very well in the meets. We have some larger meets coming up with Milaca Mega Meet, Fergus Falls and in Perham. We are looking at a little over a month left but we believe that if we keep working, this success can continue for both teams.”
