The West Central Area lady Knights posted a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-10) sweep of the Ashby Arrows in a high school volleyball contest on Thursday night.
"We worked really well as a team with all varsity players seeing court time," said Coach Amy Linn of the lady Knights. "Overall, the girls played a very balanced and consistent match and worked really hard in practice to fine tune some areas of weakness. I am very proud of the girls and the way theyplayed tonight. Ashby was a scrappy team and did not go down easily."
The Knights were 93% at the line with three players serving 100%. The girls also had six serving aces on the night. The Knights offense was well balanced with 13 set assists by Brianna Kreft, 7 kills from Gabbi Beuckens and six kills fromDemara Bumgardner. Dawn Anderson and Katie Merrick also delivered 5 kills each. The Knights had sixty digs with Morgan Sanstead recording 20 of them.
"Tonight we got off to a slow start during each set and had a difficult time gaining momentum," said first year Ashby Head Coach Whitney Moore. "We played timid, which forced us to make errors. As a team we put up a fight with several long volleys that we just weren't able to finish as West Central Area had great coverage. With the first game behind us, we have learned what skills we need to continue to work on. We are blessed with young athletes who are determined and eager to improve each game."
Leaders for Ashby were Aanika Anderson (5 kills), Abbi Evavold (9/9 serving, 2 aces) and Courtney Koefod (21 digs).
The next match for the Arrows will be in Underwood on Tuesday.
"We will need to prepare our blockers and back row for Underwood's quick offense," said Coach Moore.
West Central Area will travel to Wheaton on Tuesday.
