Friday, September 2 marked the day of the Minnesota High School Football Opener. Coach Jon Moore and his West Central Area/Ashby (WCAA) Knights hosted their home opener and Senior Night in Morris at Big Cat Stadium. The last minute move to Morris was due to field conditions in Barrett.

The 3A Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tigers (MACA) put their foot on the gas early and a thundering counter option ground attack proved a load and a half for the Knight defense to stop as the Tigers flexed their muscle in a 29-7 victory over the Knights.

The first quarter rocked the Knights hard as the Tiger offense posted three scores in quick fashion. Senior (SR) running back (RB) Jacob Zosel crossed the Knights goal line first on a five yard plunge at 9:10 in the opening period, extra point kick by (Jr.) Dylan Gillespie was good. Second score in the quarter came at 3:16 with a 16 yard scamper by (SR) RB Chase Metzgar. Extra Point kick failed. Just 25 ticks of the clock later the Tigers posted their third touchdown of the quarter when (SR) quarterback (QB) Toby Sayles connected with (JR) RB Conner Koebernick on a 17 yard strike through the air at 2:51. Gillespie's PAT kick was good ending the quarter with a 20-0 advantage for the Tigers.

The Knight defense found better footing in the second quarter holding back the Tigers scoring until at 3:31 (SR) fullback Ryan Dietz punched it in from the one yard line on a off tackle run. Gillespie added the extra point. Final score of the half came at 1:58 when a errant snap sailed over the Knight punters head from the 23 yard line, resulting in a two point safety. Final score of the first half MACA 29-WCAA 0.

Both sides of the ball played solid defense leaving the third period scoreless. Offensive life for the Knights surfaced in the fourth quarter at 8:17 when (JR) QB Ross Anderson air mailed a package to (JR) wide receiver Parker Clavin for an 80 yard score. (JR) place kicker Mason Nibbe added the extra point. Final score of the game, MACA 29-WCAA 7.

The tale of the tape was grim with the Tigers leading most statistical categories. MACA posted 275 yards of offense (239 yards of that on the ground) compared to the Knights 160. The Tigers offense controlled the ball for 55% of the plays. First down advantage came with a 14-4 swing for the Tigers.

Ross Anderson led the Knights in passing completing 7/15 attempts for 111 yards and a touchdown. Parker Clavin caught three of those balls for 90 yards and the score. On the ground (SR) RB Jacob Drecshel led the Knight rushers with 35 yards on nine carries.

Defensively the Knight leaders were linebacker Mason Nibbe with 10 tackles and a heads up fumble recovery on the 5 yard line. (JR) defensive back Kaden Spindler recorded 7.5 tackles, (SR) defensive lineman Chase Kamrath had 5.5 stops. (Sr) defensive back Caden Fernholz recorded 2 tackles, an interception returned for 6 yards and a fumble recovery returned for 15 yards.

Each week the Ashby/Dalton Post, Grant County Herald, and Herman Hoffman Tribune will name a player of the game. This weeks recipient earned it not through just his work at linebacker but Mason Nibbe proved to be a rugged and formidable center. Nibbe anchored the Knight's offensive line in both run and pass situations earning him the 'Area Press Player of the Game'.

Coach Moore stated that “the game showed us two things, 1.) You’re never as prepared as you think you are. 2.) A desire to win does not guarantee as win.” He continued to say..”As a team we recognized our strengths and weaknesses. After the game there was little to say. Leaders on the team pointed out where we struggled and what we need to be better prepared next week. We have a lot of talent on this team but struggle to communicate. When mistakes are made the team needs to come together and get ready for the next play.” Moore finished with “We lost a lot of players last year and this group is trying to find themselves.” He believes they will improve each week through effort on and off the field.

September 9th the 0-1 Knights will travel to Browerville to face off with the #7 ranked 1A, 1-0 Browerville/Eagle Valley Tigers. Kick off will commence at 7:00pm.
