The Underwood volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-13) road win over the West Central Area Knights.
"I thought we played pretty aggressive for the first match of the year," commented Underwood Head Coach Diane Ross. "We served and passed the ball well and we converted some transitions into some good swings. Jacey Ross did a nice job of distributing the ball with our outside hitters swinging for 14 kills from Brenna Tinjum and six from Emma Fitzgibbons."
Erin Andersen and Taylor Leitch each got four kills, while Sydney Hovland hit .300 getting 3 kills on 10 attempts with no errors. Defensively, we scored on 3 ace blocks and Ross led the team with 11 digs, while Maddy Hoekstra added 10.
"We were able to ace 11 serves with only 3 errors," added Coach Ross. "Grace Noyes had four of the ace serves. I though WCA was a very scrappy team, which made for some good volleys."
The Knights served 90% with Katie Merrick and Gabbi Beuckens both serving 100%. Gabbi also added 3 aces on the night. Demara Bumgardner led the attack with 8 kills and Morgan Sanstead was strong on defense with 17 digs.
"Our girls have a ton of potential and I am really excited to see where we go from here," said Head Coach Any Linn. "Underwood had a scrappy defense and a strong offense that really was able to take us out of our system."
Underwood will open conference play next Tuesday when they host the Ashby Arrows.
West Central Area will play at Ashby on Thursday.
