West Central Area speakers participated in the Minnewaska Area Schools Speech Invitational on Saturday, February 4th. It was a successful day for the Knights, bringing home five individual ribbon winners, placing in the top third as a team and introducing several new speakers to their first speech meet.
Jacob Warde and Abby Zweig successfully shared their creative expression stories for the first time. The solid crew of WCA discussants included; Ian Wittbrodt, Makenna Prairie and champion, Solomon Sewell on Saturday, with Solomon placing first in all three of his rounds. Matt Poyzer had a strong day in drama, placing third overall. Our dram duo partners included; Carly Steiner and Nissa Nadgwick and Marissa Ottinger and Cassie LeVecesque. They drew several laughs and gained meaningful speaking experience. Extemporaneous Reading was represented well, with Ava Jahnke, Emily Courrier and champion, Brianna Kreft speaking. Hannah Anderson shared her great speech for the first time and placed second. Rose Borash made her informative speaking debut, placing 5th overall and was joined by teammate, Tyler Biss. Our original oratory speakers, Ethan Olson and Solomon Sewell, did not place today, but both ranked first in at least one of their rounds. Emily Engen made her storytelling debut and was joined by teammate, Emma Saulsbury, both being told several good things about their storytelling.
Our teaming is growing in numbers every week as our less experienced speakers become ready to share their pieces and in strength as each team member perfects his/her piece, working hard on presentation skills and editing pieces as needed. “This is a talented group of wonderful students willing to devote their Saturdays to public speaking. What isn’t great about that?” says coach Kreft.
